It’s incredible how many of us live lives that require very little manual labour of any kind… myself included. In the first days of our arrival, Alejo helped us get started which involved putting up the WeatherHaven tent. This essentially meant wrestling with ropes in the wind for a full day. By the end of the day my hands were pink and throbbing from the cold and close to blistering. I looked on as Alejo cranked ropes up with little more than his thumb and forefinger… correcting my fumbling attempts at tying things off.
Yesterday we put up the wind turbine in very wet and cold conditions and I am pleased to announce that I now seem to have developed somewhat more manly hands in the few days we have been here. Perhaps by the time the rest of the expedition arrives I will be able to shake hands with the gnarled Antarctic-hands I have always dreamt of having. Remembering of course that it is sacrilegious to shake hands with one’s gloves on in the Antarctic (just a small heads-up to all you soon-to-be Antarctic travelers…).
