In August 2007, npower entered an amazing year long partnership with expedition leader and conservationist Robert Swan, and his environmental organisation 2041. As part of this three npower employees will accompany Robert Swan in the Antarctic.
In February 2008 two intrepid npower employees, Pete Forest and Russell Oliver, will join the advanced party with Robert and his team to create the world’s first education base camp, E-Base, on King George Island, Antarctica. This will be the world’s first building on Antarctica to rely solely on renewable energy.
With breathtaking scenery and extreme weather conditions, the aim of this exciting experiment is to help educate young people of the importance of preserving Antarctica, and creating an awareness of global environmental issues by broadcasting information to the world whilst using renewable energy to sustain everyday life.
The E-Base will function as a communications centre broadcasting audio, video and text via satellite ‘live’ over the internet running exclusively on solar and wind technologies provided by npower.
The other intrepid npower employee, Nicola Young, will join the expedition on an Ice Breaker for 2 weeks in March when the group progresses towards the South Pole.
Future generations of young people will be able to visit E-Base, either in person or via the internet and is therefore a fantastic opportunity for npower to be involved in something that will continue to play a part in raising awareness on environmental issues and shaping the future.
