Another video that the E-Base team have created as part of the E-Base Live 365 expedition. The video complements the 2041 Journey to Antarctica Curriculum (see Lesson 3: Rising Tides of the curriculum for further resources).

You can try the experiment at home or at school. How do you think that melting ice in the Antarctic and the Arctic will affect people around the world?

This is the fourth in our series of education videos from the E-Base team.The video complements npower’s Climate Cops education programme (see the Climate Cops website for further resources).

In this video we look at different sources of electricity and the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy.

Ola Punta Arenas. A journey always has a beginning and this is ours. I have already seen some amazing sights just to get here… the Eiffel Tower from the air at night, beaming its lighthouse-like revolving light across the rooftops of Paris, the sun rising over the snow capped Andes Mountains of South America. I feel like one of the first explorers at the very dawn of the sea travel revolution. This is incredible.

Punta is a small frontier town used to fly people in and out of the Antarctic and it is offering us sanctuary until we reach our final destination. A short flight in the back of a Hercules will take us to our new home in Bellinghausen. I can’t wait until we touch down on the makeshift runway.

I am a big believer in everything happening in life for a reason in life and feel strangely at home in our hotel room, ready to make that last jump into the unknown. Who would have thought that when the chimes of Big Ben rang in the start of 2009, I would be spending a month of my life doing something so incredible? All it took was a demonstration of the passion I feel for the environment.

I bet so many feel the same way. I can’t even comprehend the long term impacts that this work could have on our planet. I am so humbled at the thought of being on the front line of this project and from here I want to show everyone that you don’t have to have huge amounts of money to make a difference to all of our futures. A few little changes to the way we think about and use energy in our everyday lives, at home and at work, can make such a dent in the amount of greenhouse gases given we generate

In a few ways time we will have re-established the npower / 2041 E-Base as our clean and sustainable Antarctic home and will be able to communicate our message to the world. We have the best team to do this and I can’t believe that I am part of it!

Roll on Thursday…this is the start of something huge.
